Types of dental implants
Dental implants are made of a special alloy. They are implanted in lower and upper jaw bone instead of natural tooth and are fixed by dental prosthesis. Generally, dental implants are made of titanium alloy which makes them more resistant against oxygen, acid and corrosion. Titanium does not cause allergies in patients’ body and foreign objects can’t effect on body because of it. Titanium has the ability to adapt with body biologically. Dental fixed implant is a very stable mainstay for dentures. Dentures and bridges on implants don’t move inside the mouth. Solid foundation helps the dentures and bridges function as well as their coatings. The main goal of placing implants is preserving bone in edentulous areas. Sometimes, the dentist has to rebuild bone area because of moderate to severe bone loss. This is done by using bone powder and bone block. Implants are contributing to the stabilization and storage of residual bone and prevent further bone loss. They prevent higher rate of bone loss. They can preserve height and width of the bone. Thus, bone quality is preserved without any changes because of implant. In this way, bone uniformity will be preserved for ever. Dental implants are made of two main parts: fixture and abutment. At first, fixture is inserted into jaw bone and then a cover must be placed on it. After selecting the type of the implant, the dentist must insert the fixture in the bone during a surgery after considering patient's condition. Prosthetic placed on it is different; it may be fixed or movable. A person must have very healthy gums and enough jaw bone to be a good candidate for dental implant. For increasing implant life; it is recommended to take care of implants carefully, such as what you are doing for your natural teeth. Having intensive pressure is not suitable for implants. As well as hygiene and medical care are critical factors for its maintenance.
Dental implants are classified based on their position, shape and the way it has to be replaced (single- or double-stage). In this article, we are going to discuss all types of dental implants.
In this type of dental implant, a metal scaffold is placed on the jawbone and the gum cover it. Basically, the subperiosteal implants are used in single-stage method of dental implant. subperiosteal implant is inserted within the gum tissue on the jaw bone. Some parts of the implant, namely “posts” come out of the gum to hold the crown. One of the advantages of this method is for patients with low height jaw bone because this implant can hold their dentures very firmly and fixed.
In this type of dental implant, implants are inserted into the jaw bone and a strong connection is created in them. Basically, endosteal implants are used in double-stage method. Endosteal implants are inserted in jaw bone directly by a surgery. There are some different shapes for this type of implant including threaded, blade and screw. They can be used instead of dentures.
